Attar
What Is Attar? A Guide to Alcohol-Free Perfume Oils
July 16, 2026 · Habib Alruh
Attar (also spelled ittar or otto) is a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil that has been worn across the Middle East and South Asia for centuries. Where a modern spray perfume is mostly alcohol, an attar is almost pure fragrance oil, which is exactly why a single dab lasts so long and sits so close to the skin.
Attar vs. spray perfume
The difference comes down to the carrier. Eau de parfum and eau de toilette dissolve fragrance in alcohol, which flashes off quickly and projects outward. Attar suspends the same precious materials in a neutral oil base, so the scent releases slowly and warms with your body heat.
- Alcohol-free, gentler on sensitive skin and suitable for those who avoid alcohol.
- Highly concentrated, a little goes a long way; apply with the wand, don't spray.
- Long-lasting, intimate, an attar lives close to the skin and reveals itself slowly through the day.
Common notes in attar
Traditional attars are built around prized naturals, oud (agarwood), rose (especially Taif rose), musk, amber, saffron and sandalwood. At Habib Alruh our attars are our own original compositions, concentrated for depth and all-day projection.
How to wear attar
Warm one drop on the pulse points, wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat. Don't rub; let it settle. Because it is so concentrated, start small and build up. Layer it under or over a spray fragrance to make a scent your own.
