Find Your Signature Scent: A Guide to Fragrance Families
July 16, 2026 · Habib Alruh
The fastest way to find a scent you'll love, and to shop smarter, is to know the fragrance families. Think of them as the main branches of the scent world; most perfumes sit in one or blend two.
The five families
- Fresh: crisp, clean and green, aquatic, herbal and airy notes for everyday ease.
- Citrus: bright and zesty, lemon, bergamot and orange for instant lift.
- Floral: romantic and soft, rose, jasmine and blossom at the heart.
- Woody: warm and grounding, cedar, sandalwood and oud with a smoky edge.
- Oriental: opulent and sensual, amber, spice, saffron and resins for depth.
How to choose
Start with what you're drawn to in everyday life: fresh laundry and sea air point to fresh and citrus; a love of incense and spice points to oriental and woody. Try one scent from a family you like, wear it for a full day, and notice the dry-down, that lingering base is your true signature.
